The original dungeon crawler was first released in Japan in 2005, seeing an international release in 2006. The game was first released for the Game Boy Advance. Now, Nintendo is bringing it back on the GBA emulator for Nintendo Switch. This is a free program that anyone with Nintendo Switch Online and its expansion pack can get.

This was the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, and there were several more released over the years. The Mystery Dungeon games were one of the first spin-off games in the franchise.

In 2020, a remake, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX came out for the Nintendo Switch that updated graphics and added Mega Evolution. For those with a premium Nintendo Switch Online subscription, this will be a free way to play.

Players take control of a human-turned-pokémon and form a rescue team with the pokémon that found them. Together, the duo helps local pokémon that are trapped or need something from dungeons around the area. Players can recruit other pokémon they meet in the dungeons, aiming to become the best rescue team.

To decide what pokémon the player is, there’s a personality test at the start. Players are able to choose what pokémon accompanies them as well, which makes crafting dungeon teams from the start pretty easy.

Nintendo fans have been waiting for older Pokémon titles to come to the Switch, and this is the first step that they may eventually come.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team will be available on August 9, 2024.
