Today, Digital Hearts Holdings announced the hosting of the “GeeSports Tournament Finals” esports event at the ongoing 2025 World Expo hosted in Osaka, Japan.
The event is quite interesting, as it’s fully dedicated to competitors in their senior years. It’ll be hosted at the Festival Station venue of the Expo on October 1.
If you’re unfamiliar with the 2025 World Expo, Japan, also known as the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo, it’s an international exhibition with the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” It opened its gates in Osaka yesterday, April 13, and it’ll run until October 13, 2025.
“GeeSports” is the name of an organization and concept that aims to tackle the problems faced by Japan’s aging society through entertainment. It’s designing an original game that can be enjoyed regardless of the decline in physical functions associated with aging.
The aim is to provide grandparents and seniors with the excitement of gaming alongside a sense of purpose and confidence in their lives. On top of that, the hope is that the sight of seniors playing games will make those around them feel empowered and encourage the emergence of communication between generations.
As a matter of fact, the “GEE” in “GeeSports” stands for “Grandparents, Excitement, and Empower.”
GeeSports games are developed to remove the barriers that seniors face when approaching video games, and via the games themselves and the organization of events, provide them with new motivation.
The esports tournament to be held at the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo also has the aim to connect and exchange opinions with a variety of people and organizations on the topics of preserving health and combating dementia while playing video games, while verifying the potential for social participation and multigenerational exchange.
Japan has certainly been at the forefront of involving seniors into esports, including the creation of dedicated teams.
