Neon Genesis Evangelion is getting a brand-new video game, but not in the format you may expect. Developed by Pixelity Inc., the hit sci-fi anime and manga will be getting its first-ever adaptation into the world of XR (Extended Reality).
Extended Reality mixes multiple elements of the virtual and real worlds, combining augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) to create a unique experience. Neon Genesis Evangelion XR is planned to be a trilogy, placing players in the shoes of an original character and allowing them to explore the world and events of all 26 episodes.
Through this character, you’ll take on quests and engage in thrilling battles, all while following the timeline and key events of the anime. Alongside a single-player mode, it will also feature interactive and cooperative gameplay with familiar characters.
For those who have never seen the source material, Neon Genesis Evangelion story takes place in the year 2015, where mysterious beings known as ‘Angels’, each possessing unique threats, have begun the invasion of Tokyo-3. The only hope of stopping these threats is put in the hands of a group of teens, including protagonist Shinji Ikari.
Together, he and his comrades must pilot the Evangelion, a human-shaped ultimate weapon, and face the Angels in a battle that will determine the fate of mankind. Not all is as it seems on the surface, as the reason behind the Angels and why they are here uncovers a shocking truth.
While no exact release date has been announced, a window of 2026 is currently planned for the first release in the trilogy.
