Microsoft released the famous Boeing 707 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the granddaddy of jet airliners.
It’s currently available as the 10th aircraft of the “Famous Flyers ” series on the official Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 marketplace for $14.99, which is a steal for a vintage airliner with these kinds of features.
Specifically, the version on offer is the 707-320C convertible passenger-freighter model, which debuted in 1963 and was the most popular.
Developed jointly by Working Title and iniBuilds, it includes three different navigation suites: the classic CIV-A INS, the RNAV-capable UNS-1 FMS, and a Garmin GNS 530 retrofit.
It also includes a virtual flight engineer feature that is capable of handling some of the most complex operations of the airliner (which would indeed be performed by a flight engineer) automatically, if you so wish.
The developers created an app built into the simulator’s EFB tablet, which lets you customize the aircraft and plan your flights with an aircraft configuration tool, door controls, performance calculations, INS support tools, and operational utilities.
Besides the deep level of simulation, you can expect the following features among the options to make your experience smoother if you so wish.
- Automations can take over recurring in-flight tasks: fuel temperature management, air sources, EPR (Engine Pressure Ratio) bug positioning, fuel balancing, and tank selection.
- Realism options allow era and workload to be selected per system:
- Altitude selector — alerter, as in the real aircraft, or preselector, letting the autopilot capture the selected altitude — something the historical unit could not undertake.
- CIV-A procedures — optional SID and STAR import into the INS.
- Chronometer — simplified or fully simulated (down to winding it before flight).
- HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator) — historical behavior (unintuitive enough that it was discontinued on the physical aircraft) or modern, with automatic course slewing for a localizer or FMS track.
- Parking brake — realistic or simple.
- Additional options include automatic window shade management throughout the cabin and Flight Engineer callouts.
