Sony announced its financial results for the fiscal year 2024, related to the period between April 2024 and March 2025, together with the traditional update on PS5 shipments.

According to the financial documents provided by the company, Sales for the Game & Network segment, which includes PlayStation and PlayStation Network, were 402.3 billion yen (up 9% year-on-year) due to better performance of third-party games, including add-on content, and the increase in sales for network services.

This was only partly offset by the decrease in hardware unit sales and the decline in sales of first-party games.

Operating income was 124.6 billion yen (up a whopping 43% year-on-year), pretty much for the same reasons as above.

For the current fiscal year ending in March 2026, the forecast is 370.0 billion yen in sales, which would mark a further 8% increase year-on-year and 65.2 billion yen in operating income (up 16% year-on-year). Sony expects a further decline in hardware sales, but growth in sales for both third and first-party games.

2.8 million PS5 units were sold during the January-March quarter, bringing the lifetime total to 77.7 million units.

Incidentally, the quarterly unit sales for PS5 reported by Sony were over two times better compared to the unit sales for Nintendo’s Switch console, albeit the PS5 is significantly behind in lifetime sales compared to the Switch’s 152.12 million units (about half).

18.5 million units have been shipped during the full fiscal year. This is actually ahead of the 18 million units target set by the company.

76.1 million units of PS4 and PS5 software were sold during the quarter, of which 5.9 million were first-party games. 303.3 million units of software were sold during the full fiscal year, of which 28.9 million were first-party games.

The number of monthly active users for the PlayStation Network was 124 million during the latest quarter, significantly up (+6 million) year-on-year, but naturally 5 million fewer compared to the October-December 2024 holiday quarter.

Looking at the whole company, sales were 12,957.1 billion yen, essentially flat year-on-year. Operating income was 1,407.2 billion yen, +16% year-on-year.

Other gaming companies have also already announced their financial results this quarter, including Koei Tecmo, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Bandai Namco, Konami, Marvelous Entertainment, Sega, and Capcom. You can expect more reports on this topic over the coming few days.
