Today is the day. After seven years, we now know that Hollow Knight: Silksong, the much-anticipated sequel to the hit 2017 indie Metroidvania created by Team Cherry, is releasing on September 4, 2025.
Alongside being available on Game Pass as a day one release, Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available for purchase on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox, Sony PlayStation 4, Sony PlayStation 5, and DRM-free on GOG and Humble Bundle. The sequel follows a well-known figure from the first game, Hornet, as players will take control of the princess-protector of Hallownest, who now finds herself alone in a vast, unfamiliar world of the Haunted Kingdom.
Hollow Knight: Silksong features over 150 all-new foes, including a variety of imposing beasts, hunters, assassins, and kings, monsters, and knights. Alongside a lot of familiar attributes from the original, gameplay will also be expanded considerably, as Hornet can unleash an array of new devastating attacks, learn incredible silken abilities, and craft deadly tools to overcome the kingdom’s challenges.
It is also important to note that Christopher Larkin will return as soundtrack composer for the sequel, bringing melancholy melodies, symphonic strings, and heart-thumping, soul-strumming boss themes to Hornet’s adventure.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was initially announced back in 2019, and was merely supposed to be a DLC adventure where players could play as one of the game’s most popular characters, Hornet. However, the scope of the project grew so much during development that Team Cherry announced that it would become a standalone sequel.
After that announcement, there was very little information revealed regarding the game’s development, to the point where fans wondered after each big game’s conference no-show if it would ever actually be released. Thankfully, you’ll only have to wait a few more weeks to play it.
