Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studio have announced that God of War Laufey has been delayed by approximately three months and will now arrive exclusively for PS5 on May 20, 2027.
Originally scheduled to launch on February 16, 2027, the team announced the delay to give the development team more time to polish the experience ahead of release. Santa Monica Studio said the extra time will let it put the finishing touches on the project and deliver the experience it envisions, thanking fans for their continued excitement and acknowledging the expectations surrounding the next installment in one of PlayStation’s most recognizable franchises.
Originally revealed in June 2026, God of War Laufey marks a significant departure from the series by shifting the spotlight away from Kratos and placing his wife, Faye, at the center of the story. Set after God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, the game explores a previously unseen chapter of the franchise’s mythology, giving players a chance to learn more about Faye’s past and her life beyond the Norse saga.
The story of God of War Laufey follows Faye as she awakens in a mythological afterlife known as the Everywhen following her death. Her journey will involve finding a way back home while protecting Kratos and their son, Atreus, from the dangerous forces inhabiting this mysterious realm. The setting will also introduce a broader collection of mythologies, gods, and supernatural characters, expanding the franchise beyond the Norse mythology that defined its previous two main installments.
Among the characters introduced so far are Phranque, a mysterious cosmic cube with no memory of his past, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon that keeps a powerful sword out of the wrong hands. The weapon will eventually serve as Faye’s primary means of combat, offering a different approach to the action and combat systems traditionally associated with the series.
Although Faye played an important role in the Norse saga, much of her history remained unexplored, and players experienced her influence largely through Kratos and Atreus. Making her the protagonist gives Santa Monica Studio a chance to expand her character while introducing new mythology, locations, and conflicts to the established God of War universe.
Santa Monica Studio has not announced any additional changes to the game’s release plans, with further details expected as development continues.
