Today, Epic Games announced that the price of V-Bucks, the paid currency used in Fortnite, is going to increase.
Specifically, the change will go live on March 19, and you will get fewer V-Bucks for the same price as before.
The $8.99 packs will grant 800 V-Bucks instead of 1,000. The $22.99 packs will grant 2,400 V-Bucks instead of 2,800. The $36.99 packs will grant 4,500 V-Bucks instead of 5,000, and the $89.99 packs will grant 12,500 V-Bucks instead of 13,500.
The worst hike will come for purchasing exact amounts of V-Bucks. One unit will basically double in price, from approximagtely $0.50 to $0.99.
Fortnite Crew subscriptions will also offer less currency, down to 800 V-Bucks from 1,000.
To offer some apparent relief, the price of the Battle Pass will drop to 800 V-Bucks from 1,000, but it’s just a matter of giving with one hand and taking (more) with the other, as previously it rewarded you with 1,000 V-Bucks plus 500 in the bonus unlocks. Now it’ll reward you only 800 with no bonus.
The cost of special passes is also dropping slightly. The OG Pass will cost 800 V-Bucks (down from 1,000), the Music Pass will cost 1,200 V-Bucks (down from 1,400), and the LEGO Pass will cost 1,200 V-Bucks (down from 1,400).
If you have V-Bucks gift cards stored, you’ll still get the original value in V-Bucks even after the change.
The reason given for the change was pretty terse; apparently, the cost of running the game and its growing Metaverse-style component “has gone up a lot” and the price hike is designed “to help pay the bills.”
Incidentally, the change goes live exactly as the next season (Chapter 7, Season 2) is going to hit.
