While the restrictions implemented after the release of Dawntrail have been lifted, this doesn’t mean we can travel completely freely.

The rules are based on world classification, as some servers (called “Worlds” in Final Fantasy XIV) are classified as congested when they have a higher concentration of players, while others are classified as “standard.”

Incidentally, Worlds are grouped in Data Centers, several per region (North America, Europe, Oceania, and Japan).

Below you can find the nitty-gritty according to the official announcement on the Lodestone website.

  • Standard Worlds with no Congested Worlds within the same Logical Data Center
    • World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
    • Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Standard
  • Standard Worlds with one or more Congested Worlds within the same Logical Data Center
    • World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
    • Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Greatly Reduced
  • New and Preferred Worlds
    • World Visit Login Capacity: Standard
    • Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Increased
  • Congested Worlds
    • World Visit Login Capacity: Reduced
    • Data Center Travel Login Capacity: Greatly Reduced

Basically, visiting congested Worlds in your same data center will still be harder, and it’ll be quite a lot more challenging to find a slot to visit Worlds in a different data center that has a congested World or more, whether you’re visiting the specific congested World or not.

If the travel capacity reaches its limit, you won’t be able to use the system. If you logged out in a world that has reached capacity, you’ll have to return to your home World via the option in the login screen.

This is being enforced to “promote the even distribution of players” across all Worlds.

Final Fantasy XIV is currently available for PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S. The new expansion, titled “Dawntrail” was released earlier this month, and you can read more about it in our article discussing its main character, Wuk Lamat.
