Today the National Press and Publication Administration of the People’s Republic of China published a list of foreign games that have been approved for release in the country, including what appears to be a Final Fantasy XIV mobile game.

According to the document on the authority’s website, fifteen games were approved on August 1, including a mobile game titled “Final Fantasy XIV: Crystal World” (in Chinese, so the actual title in English may vary if it ever gets localized).

At the moment, Square Enix has shared no official announcement about the game, and details about it are unknown.

That being said, the house of Final Fantasy is slated to announce its financial results in a few days, and we might hear something then.

The original Final Fantasy XIV first launched in September 2010 only for PC, with a PS3 version announced. Due to poor reception, the team was overhauled in December under the leadership of Naoki Yoshida, and the laborious work to improve it began in earnest.

While the game was patched several times, Square Enix was secretly developing a brand new release, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which was announced in 2011 and released in 2013 for PC and PS3, marking one of the most relevant stories of redemption ever seen in the MMORPG industry.

The game has been on the rise ever since, with releases on PS4, then PS5, and finally Xbox Series X|S earlier this year. During the latest Fan Festival hosted in Japan at Tokyo Dome, Square Enix announced that the game passed 30 million registered players.

In early July 2024, Square Enix released the latest expansion, titled “Dawntrail” and bringing players to an entirely new continent. The traditional summer event Moonfire Faire has recently been revealed and is coming soon.

We’ll keep you posted if anything about this new mobile game is officially announced down the line.
