Today, both developer Type Moon and publisher Bandai Namco announced some rather radical changes related to the JRPG Fate/Extra Record.
A statement has been issued on the official account of the game, mentioning that Bandai Namco Entertainment has decided to cancel the sale of Fate/Extra Record. On top of that, pre-orders will be canceled and refunded.
Yet, that’s not the full story, as Type-Moon also issued its own separate statement. This one mentions that Notes (Type-Moon’s official corporate name) and Bandai Namco have been in discussion about the game, and a decision has been taken to review the project, including changes to its development structure.
The plans for the future of the game also include a change of publisher. Due to these adjustments, the release will be delayed. That being said, the statement clearly states that development will continue, and Type-Moon will announce the new publisher and release timing when they are decided.
So, basically, Bandai Namco is out, but development is apparently continuing while Type-Moon seeks publishing options.
If you’re unfamiliar with Fate/Extra Record, it’s a remake of the original Fate/Extra, a JRPG originally released in 2010 for Sony’s PSP. It’s particularly beloved among the fans as the first RPG of the Fate series.
The remake was announced several years ago, in 2020, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original game. In 2024, it was announced that it would be released in 2025 for PS5, PS4, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch.
Last summer, an announcement was shared with a delay to Spring 2026.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Fate series, it originally debuted in 2004 with Fate/stay night, and it has been Type-Moon’s household name for two decades.
Recently, Type-Moon released the remaster of the original game, Fate/stay night Remastered, followed by one of its sequel, Fate/hollow ataraxia Remastered.
While the original was an adult game, the franchise has since shifted to an all-ages target. This is quite common among Japanese franchises that started as eroge, especially when releasing on consoles or getting anime adaptations.
Its popularity has grown exponentially over the years, culminating with the mobile game Fate/Grand Order, which still enjoys a massive audience in Japan and worldwide.
