Today, Electronic Arts returned to the ice for another deep dive of its highly realistic hockey franchise, EA Sports NHL 26. This quick look at gameplay shows off a slew of new features coming to the game this year, including over 80 new save animations, a redesigned X-Factor system, and considerably improved AI.
As they teased a bit earlier this month, the brand new Goalie Crease Control System is set to be a staple of EA Sports NHL 26. For save animations, goalies will now have access to a variety of different movements, like reflex saves, better body traps, and more active stick work to sweep away low shots.
Situation awareness will also result in quicker pokes, tighter seals, and improved reactions in close for your netminders, meaning that quick forehand-backhand deke or a cross-crease passes will no longer be guaranteed goals. Now, goalies will use positional and pose-matching logic that lets them react more quickly and pre-emptively to the shot they’re facing.
For X-Factors, you’ll have access to 28 new ones at launch, with each design built around a specific gameplay identity and supported by visual triggers and tactical outcomes. Each ability will have three levels of effectiveness, with higher tiers becoming more pronounced, and there are no longer passive boosts; instead, they rely on situational tools to swing momentum.
Last but not least, Ice-Q 2.0 will serve to help the AI in EA Sports NHL 26 react smarter and make better decisions. The engine is created based on the same player tracking tech used in all 32 NHL arenas, which will influence the way players move, think, and respond in real-time when playing a match.

EA Sports NHL 26 is set to release on September 25, 2025, and is now available for pre-order on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC or Nintendo Switch 2 release planned for this year. For more information on this and other EA Sports titles, be sure to check back to Simulation Daily.
