The Siege Update, or update 53.01, for Dwarf Fortress is here, bringing new ways for invading enemies to break into players’ camps while also giving players new ways to fight them off.
To start with, here’s a list of some of the new ways invaders can breach player defenses:
- Build stairs and floors
 - Break down constructions and other blocking buildings
 - Use battering rams
 - Dig through natural walls
 - Avoid places where deaths and traps have been in the past
 - Use better equipment (and have higher intelligence in general)
 - Free their companions who have been trapped

Players can also adjust various difficulty settings to put restrictions on what enemies can and can’t do.
To deal with all these new sieging mechanics, players have additional defense strategies and tools, such as the following:
- Bolt Thrower Siege Engine
 - Catapults and Ballista Siege Engines can fire in a full arc, as well as a bit vertically
 - Exploding Boulderse
 - Reinforced Walls
 - War Dogs stay with their masters longer
 - Siege Operators won’t run away as quickly

While the latest siege mechanics are the focus of the update, there were also several other changes made. For example, the tavern has a new song that will play, and there were many fixes made. Additionally, there’s been a major optimization when it comes to pond filling.
