Funcom announced that Dune: Awakening will have private servers when the massive multiplayer survival game launches.

Players will be able to rent private servers, a highly requested feature according to Funcom. Those who have their own server will be able to limit who can join the server, and there will be various gameplay settings that can be changed, including a free-for-all PvP mode.

Other settings that can be adjusted include taxation and the appearance of sandstorms.

These private servers are still tied to a World with other private servers, giving players the best of both worlds. Essentially, Worlds will contain multiple private servers. Players will meet at social hubs and the Deep Desert, which is where players could potentially run into conflict.

Players in these Worlds will also be able to trade and interact in various social activities. This keeps the spirit of the MMO alive while giving players a chance to have their own spaces.

Funcom shared a graphic to help players understand this a bit better:

Because of this, private servers can only change a limited number of settings — they’re still sharing the World with others, and one private server can’t change the game for everyone.

According to Funcom, private servers were one of the biggest features that the community asked for. Funcom had originally planned to add them post-release, but they were created faster than it expected (and the delay could have given the team more time).

For right now, there will be no administrator control panel or the ability to transfer characters. These may be added in the future, after Fancom has evaluated how everything works.

Players will be able to rent servers from GPortal, Nitrado, and xRealm.

Now, private servers are ready to go when Dune: Awakening head start launches on June 5 for those who pre-ordered the game, and June 10 for everyone else.
