Today, Square Enix officially revealed the first look at the next mainline Dragon Quest game, now officially titled Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.
We get to see the protagonist, a young hero who witnesses strange visions as he dreams. The video also shows two more characters, a redheaded heroine who appears to be some sort of mechanic, and a lizard-like knight.
Development took longer than expected due to a reboot of the process and a reshuffling of the team. While the game was announced a long time ago, the developers and the series’ creator, Yuji Horii, decided to completely change direction and start from scratch.
Horii-san mentions that this won’t be a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future, and the gorgeous and colorful visuals you’ll see below certainly match this description.
This is reflected in the new subtitle, “Beyond Dreams.” Originally, the game was announced as “Flames of Fate.”
We also hear that the characters were still designed by Akira Toriyama and the music is by Koichi Sugiyama, despite the fact that both have recently passed away.
Dragon Quest XII wasn’t the only reveal today, as we got the announcement of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.
It’s coming soon for PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. More information will be shared about the game down the line, but we already get to see the protagonists.
You can check out the trailer below, although there honestly isn’t all that much to see just yet.
