In Crusader Kings 3: Khans of the Steppe, players are tasked with becoming the most legendary ruler of the Eurasian steppe. This second core expansion adds numerous features and gameplay systems, including a new Story, Government, and Region.

The story starts out by placing you in the shoes of a young Temüjin with a simple goal: become the greatest ruler in history. To do this, you’ll face many trials, as you must prove yourself to the Kurultai councils by being victorious in battles, which will be celebrated by promotions and Mongolian traditions like Tsagaan Sar.

The new Government will center around Nomadic traditions, as you’ll be able to govern through herds, migration, and an Obedience system to keep your people strong and loyal. The Steppe Region will provide numerous challenges and obstacles to overcome, as the shifting fertility of its lands are both wide and unpredictable, meaning you’ll have to adapt in order to survive.

Even rulers like the Khans need alliances, and the Tributaries System will be key to that. Using this system, you’ll be able to forge partnerships and secure resources through relationships, with the hope of uniting the Steppe under your banner as its Great Khan.

Alongside these new features, the expansion also introduces some important quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes via the free 1.16.0 “Chamfron” update. These range from animation issues to tweaks to AI, such as instances where they will now check if they can feudalize holdings. You can see the full list of changes here.

Crusader Kings 3: Khans of the Steppe can be purchased either as a standalone expansion or as part of the Chapter 4 bundle. For more information on this and other strategy games, be sure to check back to Simulation Daily.
