Today Circana (formerly NPD) revealed its statistics for the US gaming market in the month of June.
The data was shared as usual by Executive Director and Video Game Industry Advisor Mat Piscatella Mat Piscatella on X (formerly Twitter).
We learn that Sony’s PS5 topped the hardware market for both unit sales and dollar sales. The Xbox Series X|S was second for dollar sales, while the Nintendo Switch was second for unit sales.
Looking at the first half of the year, the three consoles are ranked exactly in the same way.
In terms of software, Elden Ring was propelled back to the first spot among all platforms, thanks to the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. It’s worth mentioning that Elden Ring was also at the top for monthly active users.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III ranked second, and Kingdom Hearts: Integrum Masterpiece ranked third, propelled by its Steam release.
Below you can find the partial ranking for 2024, with Helldivers II at the top, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, and Dragon’s Dogma 2.
In terms of software sales by specific platform, Elden Ring and Modern Warfare III were first and second respectively on both PlayStation and Xbox (with MLB: The Show 24 third on PlayStation and The Elder Scrolls Online third Xbox).
The ranking on Nintendo sees Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD at the top, followed by Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (earlier today Nintendo published the total unit sales for both games). The basically immortal Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was in third place.
Total video game sales in the US were down by 5% year-on-year in June, while they’re up 1% if we look at the first half of 2024.

The biggest year-on-year drop was video game hardware. Accessories also dropped by 7% with PS5 Dual Sense Wireless Controller Midnight Black being the best seller by units and PlayStation Portal taking the top for dollar sales.
