Avatar: The Last Airbender is finally getting the RPG that fans have been begging for, as it was announced earlier today by Paramount Game Studios that Saber Interactive would be developing a new AAA video game title based in the Avatar Legends universe. The action-RPG is being created for PC and consoles, and will be set 1,000 years before the events of the original show.
When talking about the announcement, Senior Vice President of Games and Emerging Media at Paramount Doug Rosen said, “We know loyal fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender have been eager for more stories that bring them into the universe of the show, and through gaming, weāre able to expand the world-building and allow fans to experience the new content in a completely immersive way.ā
He went on to compliment Saber Interactive for its previous track record of bringing established universes to life in gaming adaptations. Their previous works as developers include Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park: Survival, and World War Z.
Despite being set so far in the past, the Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG is set to include familiar elements from the franchise (literally), allowing fans to explore an era in between Avatar Wan and Aang. Players will be placed into the shoes of a never-before-seen Avatar, with a unique story developed in close collaboration with Avatar Studios.
Originally airing on Nickelodeon back in February 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for three seasons and 61 episodes. Even after two decades, the series is still held in high regard by both kids and adults alike, receiving numerous spin-off shows, movies, comics, and games.
Outside of the Legends of Korra follow-up television series, many of the adaptations have been panned by critics, especially the games. In 2021, franchise co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko opened Avatar Studios with the hope of advising all future products to be more in line with the values of the original series.
Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG is the second game announced by the studio since its formation, with the first being a mobile game, Avatar Generations, from Square Enix that launched in 2023 that has already been shut down. Currently, there is no release window or date for the game, but we will be sure to keep you updated.
