According to a post made on X (formerly Twitter), the game has now passed 6 million units sold, which is an absolutely flattering result for a relatively niche genre

This is especially true considering that Ace Combat 7 has already shattered all previous sales records for the franchise.

Executive Vice President Kazutoki Kono also provided a statement, expressing words of thanks to customers and developers and elation for having reached so many people around the world.

“It has been six years since the release of Skies Unknown, and the total number of copies sold worldwide has passed six million. My desire to connect with as many people as possible has become a reality. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a copy and everyone involved. I am very grateful.”

… and we’re grateful as well, Kono-san, for one of the best air combat titles ever created.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and it has recently been released for Nintendo Switch as well. It was released on January 18, 2019, so tomorrow it’ll celebrate its sixth anniversary.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Ace Combat series, it’s a franchise of “simulation-lite” air combat games focusing on contemporary fighter jets and is well-known for its cinematic and deep storytelling.

We already know that the next game of the series is being developed together with ILCA (which recently shipped Sand Land for Bandai Namco) in Unreal Engine 5, but we have not heard much since.

Recently, Kono-san himself mentioned that it’ll take a bit longer before the developers are ready to reveal the game, but it’s making progress. In the meantime, the series will celebrate its 30th anniversary on June 30, 2025.
