Today, Devolver Digital, the video game publishing company best known for its outlandish livestreams and marketing, is establishing another label. Known as Big Fan, the new publisher will focus on adapting iconic established brands into video games.
The team of Big Fan is made up of industry veterans from both sides, gaming and entertainment, coming from properties like Dune, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Lord of the Rings, Hellboy, Evil Dead, John Wick, Blair Witch, The Power Rangers. The goal is to take established universes from fans favorite movies, comics, and TV shows and expand into the realm of gaming.
According to the press release, the big difference when it comes to Big Fan is that they want to give indie developers more wiggle room. They want to let them “take some risks and explore unique ideas that aren’t dictated by spreadsheets” – something that they say is hindered by similar adaptations that are licensed games.
Thanks to pre-existing partnerships under Devolver Digital, Big Fan already has avenues of collaboration with big names in the entertainment industry, including Disney, Dark Horse Comics, Rebellion, and Lionsgate. While no exact projects have been announced yet, the team is already working with these partners to come up with new ideas for video game adaptations.
Alongside the weird marketing practices, Devolver Digital is also best known for publishing titles like Cult of the Lamb, The Talos Principle 2, Enter the Gungeon, GRIS, Hotline Miami, and Inscryption, just to name a few. For more information, be sure to check Simulation Daily for updates.
