Today Cloud Imperium Games released a new video about the upcoming Alpha 4.0 update coming to the space simulator Star Citizen.
The video focuses on the new Pyro star system, that will be added in Alpha 4.0, and on the conflicts that can arise on its planets.
Since Pyro is pretty much a lawless system, conflict can happen at any time and anywhere, so you may find yourself jumping behind a kiosk you were using to purchase some items in order to get some cover from a sudden attack.
NPCs have different loadouts and traits, offering different experiences. One of the factions even has Kopions (one of Star Citizen’s animals) that they can use in combat.
Players can enlist with one of two factions, the Headhunters and the Citizens for Prosperity. While they fight each other, they both also fight against the third faction Xenothreat.
The video also shows some of the settlements and outposts that will serve as the backdrop of these conflicts.
Incidentally, the new content showcased here is expected to come in Q4 this year. Just last night, the game received another sizable update, Alpha 3.24.
If you’re unfamiliar with Star Citizen, it’s a crowdfunded multiplayer open-universe sandbox space simulator that has been in development for several years. It’s directed by Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame.
It has received over $718 million in crowdfunding ($718,450,047 at the moment of this writing) and counts 5,331,158 registered users. Of course, many of them aren’t paying customers, as they register accounts to enjoy Free Fly Events.
A single-player campaign named Squadron 42 is also in development (and we learned last year that it was feature-complete) and it will star an exceptional cast including Mark Hamill, Henry Cavill, Gary Oldman, Liam Cunningham, Gillian Anderson, and several more well-known actors.
If you’re interested in Star Citizen, learning how to fly certainly won’t hurt. To that end, you can enjoy our helpful guide on how to get started with flight simulators.
Full disclosure: the author of this article has backed Star Citizen’s crowdfunding campaign.
