MicroProse released a new patch of its World War II flight simulator B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th Redux, currently in early access.

The update’s main aim is to improve performance. Previously, the damage inflicted on the B-17s would slow down performance over time as visual effects accumulated on the skin.

With the patch numbered 1.0.13 and nicknamed “Tondelayo,” the system has been rewritten to work in hardware, and that should bring a visible improvement in performance, or at less less degradation as missions progress.

Here are the full patch notes, which also include the iconic olive livery.

Features

  • Olive skin
  • There have been some deep changes to the way that damage changes skin textures, rewriting the system to work on hardware. This should alleviate frame drops when there is a lot of damage happening to multiple B17s
  • Rationalization of fighter attack waves

Fixes

  • There’s a fix for sliding targets while looking through the Norden Bombsight
  • There’s been a fix for joysticks with throttle and rotational control to allow these to be bound

If you’re unfamiliar with the sim, now available in early access on PC, it’s a remaster of MicroProse’s own 2000 classic originally developed by Wayward Design as part of the golden era of PC flight simulation.

If you’re interested in flight simulation but you’d like some guidance to take the first step into this complex but rewarding hobby, you can read our introductory guide to flight simulation, alongside the second episode focusing on installing add-ons, and another showcasing the basic instruments.
