Xbox Announces AI Copilot or Gaming

Microsoft has been trying to push generative AI on gamers for a while, and today we saw another step in that direction with the reveal of “Copilot for Gaming” by Xbox.

The new episode of the Xbox podcast involves Xbox Corporate Vice President of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, as she explains how Xbox Insiders will be able to access an early preview of the feature soon.

The feature is shown in sample footage as it directs the player to perform a variety of actions (including enabling cheats on Minecraft), analyzes the situation, and provides advice.

We also hear that it should be able to install games when instructed and provide a summary of where the player left off.

Kardar mentions that the creators of the feature want to partner with content creators who make guides and similar content allowing them to benefit as well. Of course, we’ve heard this promise before, and its application is still very much debatable.

The three principles upon which Copilot is built are “capability, adaptability, and personalization,” and it should be able to provide services like “personalized game recommendations and seamless game setup” or “helpful coaching and maintaining connections with friends.”

Players will also be able to decide how and when to interact with the Copilot.

In other Xbox news, we also hear from Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald, who announced that there are now over 1,000 games supporting Xbox Play Anywhere and allowing players to switch platforms seamlessly among those available, picking up where they have left.

Interestingly, Ronald mentions that games that include the feature get 20% more gameplay on average, as they can be played on portable screens.

We’ll have to wait and see how generative AI will influence gaming and if this new Copilot feature will be widely used. Luckily, there are still plenty of gamers who enjoy playing by using their own human brain.
